The Khalifa Isyaku Rabi’u University, Kano, has announced the commencement of academic activities for the 2023/2024 academic session with 16 programmes.
Rabiu Ishaku Rabiu, son of the Founder of the university, disclosed this shortly after the inauguration ceremony of the governing council of the university.
Mr Rabi’u said that all necessary arrangements had been put in place to ensure the university’s smooth takeoff in January 2023 for smooth academic sessions.
He expressed concern over the limited admission opportunities available in the country’s tertiary institutions, with only a small percentage of admission seekers gaining admission each year.
He noted that the university’s establishment was timely as a significant number of candidates seeking admission in Nigeria are unable to secure spots in existing institutions, citing instances with World Bank indicator which quoted put number of candidates who don’t gain admission yearly between 84.7 per cent and 94.8 per cent.
“After obtaining licence, inaugurating its board of trustees, and now the governing council, the management is in place, the process of enrolling students is on.
“We are fully funded and the university is ready to hit the ground running.
We will kick start academic activities by December/January. And all the processes will be completed by next month.
“Our university cannot come at better time. It is highly disturbing to note that the number of candidates applying for admission every year in Nigeria, only 5.2 per cent to 15.3 per cent get admitted every year.
“This means between 84.7 per cent to 94.8 per cent of the candidates seeking admissions every year do not get admitted. In 2018, it was reported that only 12.1 per cent got admitted according to the World Bank collection of development indicator,” Rabi’u said.
On his part, the vice-chancellor of the university, Prof. Abdulrashid Garba, said the institution has finalised discussions with the National Universities Commission, NUC, and the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB.
Mr Garba said NUC had approved 18 programmes but that the committee advised it to put on hold two programmes, which are LLB Shariah and Common Law because of the requirements.
He described the inauguration of the board members as timely to support the management toward the smooth take off of the institution.
Earlier, the Chairman of the Governing Council, Kabiru Isyaku, expressed confidence in the council’s ability to make the university one of the best in the world, given the wealth of experience among its members.
