Disability Commission Seeks Partnership With Media on Inclusivity

The National Commission for Persons with Disabilities is looking to collaborate with Human Rights Radio on the importance of including handicapped people and fighting for their rights.

The Executive Secretary of the Commission, Mr James David Lalu, made this known when he visited the Human Rights Radio Studios in Abuja on Thursday, September 7, 2023, to widen the reach of Persons with Disabilities across Nigeria.

In his remarks, James expressed gratitude to the Radio Station for assisting in the coverage of disability issues, and he also asked for Management approval for greater cooperation.

He also used the occasion to acknowledge the political will displayed by previous Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari in establishing the Commission, as well as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s will to continue on the same path.

“We will continue to acknowledge the immediate past and the present Presidents of Nigeria as the defenders of the rights of Persons With Disabilities, Lalu said.

The boss of the Commission also informed about the Accessibility Standard Law, which will be enforced when it expires in January 2024.

According to him, the law gives the commission the authority to close public facilities that do not meet the Minimum Accessibility Standards.

The creator and President of Human Rights Radio, Ahmed Isa, popularly known as ‘Ordinary President,’ who was visibly enthused by the visit, responded quickly and expressed his delight at receiving the delegation.

He further promised to provide every support needed in partnership with the Commission to alleviate the plights of Persons With Disabilities in Nigeria.

The Ordinary President further pledged to offer one year of free airtime for the Commission every Thursday at the station to handle disability issues with the support of Federal Competition and Consumer Protection (FCCP).

Ahmed Isa then appreciated the Executive Secretary for his passion and reiterated his commitment to making lives better for Persons With Disabilities in the country.
