HoR: Why we increased House committees from 109 to 134 – Speaker, Abass

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas says the number of standing committees of the House was increased from 109 to 134 to ensure efficiency.

Abbas stated this on Tuesday during an interaction with journalists covering the House.

He noted that the House also created a committee that will ensure that the legislative agenda of the House is complied with.

“You will agree with me that in the past not all committees were active because of one thing or the other. This time around, we want to ensure that every standing committee lives up to its responsibility. Every standing committee must be seen working for the betterment of Nigeria,” he said.

The speaker stated that the committee on tertiary education was divided into several committees because the old committee had too many institutions and it was over-sighting.

I give you an example, the committee on Tertiary Education in the past has over 300 agencies under it. They won’t be able to cover the agencies within the year,” he said.
