NTA Umuahia staff cry out over refuse dump beside station

Staff of Nigeria Television Authority, NTA Channel 21 Umuahia, have appealed to Abia State government to urgently relocate the refuse dump sited beside their office off Umuahia-Enugu expressway.

The refuse dump, they said, is constituting environmental and general health hazard for them.

Some of the NTA staff, including Delight Njinkonye, while expressing their minds about the development, complained that the mountain situated close to their station is causing great inconvenience for the NTA workers.

According to revision workers, the dump site has continued to increase in size and producing dangerous odour, which sometimes, makes the staff fall sick.

Apart from these, the NTA Channel 21 staff complained that big flies from the refuse heap sometimes perch around their offices, which makes the working environment very uncomfortable for them.

During the protest, they begged Governor Alex Otti to direct officials of Abia State Environmental Protection Agency to evacuate the same waste.

When contacted by Media Talk Africa, the General Manager of Abia State Environmental Protection Agency, ASEPA, Ogbonna Okereke, promised that the dump would be cleared before next week, adding that he already had the mandate of Governor Alex Otti to clear the refuse.

“That dump was negotiated by the previous government. I have discussed this with my boss, the executive governor of the state, and I assure you that by this time next week, the dump is going to be removed”, the ASEPA boss, Ogbonna Okereke assured.
