Fatal Accidents on Nigerian Roads Decrease by 15.5% – FRSC

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has reported a significant 15.5% reduction in road traffic fatalities during the first half of 2023.

In a statement released on Wednesday in Abuja, Assistant Corps Marshal Bisi Kazeem, the spokesperson for the FRSC, announced that a total of 5,700 Road Traffic Crashes (RTCs) were recorded, compared to 6,627 during the same period in the preceding year, 2022.

According to Mr. Kazeem, there was a 14% reduction in RTCs, as indicated by the FRSC road traffic crash dashboard within the review period. Additionally, the number of rescued victims with injuries decreased by 14% between January and June.

The FRSC rescued a total of 16,716 accident survivors in 2023, as opposed to the 19,440 injured in accidents during the same period in 2022.

“On the number of people killed, the corps also recorded a significant reduction within the same operational period under review,” said Mr. Kazeem.

According to the crash data report, the FRSC recorded a total of 2,850 fatalities in the first six months of 2023, down from 3,375 fatalities in the same period in 2022, representing a 15.5% reduction.

Mr. Kazeem quoted the FRSC Corps Marshal, Dauda Biu, who attributed this modest achievement to several strategies and innovations in enforcement activities.

He mentioned the improved presence and visibility of FRSC personnel, public enlightenment, and engagement with partners during the review period.

Mr. Biu urged motorists to refrain from bad driving habits, emphasizing that the Corps would remain vigilant in monitoring and dealing with any driving infractions.

This would be achieved through the sanitization of highways and the implementation of safety measures across the country’s over 200,000 kilometers of road network.
