The United Nations (UN) has emphasized the importance of collective actions in promoting sustainable peace in Nigeria. Kimaris Toogood, the Peace and Development Advisor of the UN in Nigeria, made this call during the International Day of Peace ceremony organized by the UN Information Centre (UNIC) in Abuja on Wednesday.

The International Day of Peace, observed globally on September 21st each year, focuses on the theme of “Actions for Peace”. It serves as a reminder that peace is not a passive endeavor but requires proactive efforts from individuals and communities.

Toogood highlighted three crucial actions that are necessary to drive peace in the country, emphasizing the need for collective efforts. He stated, “Firstly, we need to build the social contract; we need to ensure that institutions are accountable to the people and that people are accountable to one another. This will help strengthen social cohesion, which is a driving force here in Nigeria.”

In addition, Toogood expressed the importance of acknowledging and celebrating peacebuilders. He emphasized, “People are building peace every day in this country, and their contributions often go unnoticed. As the UN, we see every person in Nigeria as a member of our community, and it is their responsibility to act peacefully and be peacebuilders in their communities.”

The UN advisor also emphasized the need for tolerance and acceptance of others to build a more peaceful society in Nigeria. He remarked, “We can create a more peaceful society in Nigeria if we exercise tolerance and acceptance of others, always remembering the core principles of kindness.”

Toogood expressed gratitude to Nigerians for their close collaboration with the UN in building a stronger and more peaceful country through tolerance and mutual understanding.

Mrs. Fatima Babba, the Director Co-Curricular of the FCT Secondary Education Board, also commended the UN for organizing the peace program in the country. She stressed the need for global peace, emphasizing that without peace, meaningful achievements would be impossible. She called on everyone to embrace peace as a way of life.

Babba stated, “Where there is no peace, chaos reigns. Therefore, significant investments in education are crucial, as education is essential for societal development. As an education board, we are shaping today and tomorrow’s leaders, and we understand the importance of educating their minds towards peace. When children grow up with a peace-oriented mindset, they will extend peace to their workplaces, families, communities, and the world.”

Highlighting the significance of peace, Babba added, “Peace is vital in all aspects of our lives, including our workplaces, places of worship, communities, and homes. If a family is not at peace, it affects the entire household. Achieving peace requires collective effort and a passion to move the nation forward. We must address the divisions caused by differences in religion, ethnicity, and political ideologies.”
