Amidst high tensions, security has been significantly bolstered in Enugu State as the Governorship Election Petition Tribunal prepares to deliver its verdict on a petition contesting the March 18 election results.

The petition was filed by Mr Chijioke Edeoga of the Labour Party (LP) in an effort to challenge the declaration of Mr Peter Mbah of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the elected governor.

Justice Kudirat Morayo, heading the three-member tribunal panel, is presiding over the case.

While closely monitoring the proceedings, our correspondents have observed the deployment of the Rapid Response Squad from the Nigerian police in strategic locations to preempt any potential violent protests.

A contingent of nine Toyota Hilux vans and three Armoured Personal Carriers (APCs) has been stationed around the tribunal premises to ensure maximum security.

In addition, approximately 50 security personnel from the police force, army, Department of State Services (DSS), and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) have been strategically positioned in various formations around the tribunal premises.

When reached for comment, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, the Enugu State Police Spokesman, informed NAN (News Agency of Nigeria) that the heavy security presence in the area and in strategic locations is a routine precautionary measure.

He further stated that this security arrangement is aimed at guaranteeing the safety and well-being of all individuals present, both before, during, and after the judgment is announced.
