In a joint operation between security agencies, vigilantes, and locals, a total of 21 suspected bandits have been neutralized in Danko Wasagu Local Government Area of Kebbi State, according to an official statement.
Hussani Bena, Chairman of the Council, confirmed the development in a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Thursday.
The local government area of Danko Wasagu shares a border with Mariga Local Government Area of Niger State, providing an avenue for the bandits to access Kebbi.
Bena explained that the incident occurred between Monday and Wednesday, with the bandits infiltrating Tudun Bichi in Wasagu through Mariga. However, thanks to reliable intelligence, the security agencies, vigilantes, and locals were able to anticipate their arrival and successfully ambush them.
Working together, the locals and vigilantes killed 17 suspected bandits and seized their weapons, ammunition, and motorcycles. Unfortunately, two locals lost their lives in the operation.
Bena further revealed that the bandits later moved to Tangaran village, where they kidnapped nine farmers whilst at work on their farmlands. Thankfully, through the collective efforts of security agencies, vigilantes, and locals at Lugga village under Ayu District, all nine farmers were safely rescued.
Additionally, a vigilant watch on the bandits’ movements led to another encounter at Bakin Gulbi village. Four bandits were eliminated, weapons were recovered, and three kidnapped individuals were rescued. Bena assured the public that the security agencies are closely monitoring the bandits’ activities for further action.
However, it was also reported that the bandits killed Marafan Mai Inuwa and abducted several individuals in the Kanya District. Fortunately, the military successfully rescued the abducted individuals after engaging the bandits in a confrontation.
In response to this incident, the Chairman visited Kanya District and expressed condolences to the affected communities. He also delivered a message from His Excellency, Kauran Gwandu, and emphasized the importance of unity and cooperation in the fight against crime.
Bena commended the bravery of security agencies, vigilantes, and locals and urged the public to provide credible intelligence to support ongoing efforts to rid the area of criminal elements. He also appealed for increased military presence in Malekachi and Dankade villages, which are known transit routes for the bandits.
The Chairman assured the public that the Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs had been briefed on the situation and efforts would be made to provide relief materials to those affected by the attacks.
This operation marks a significant victory in the fight against banditry and is a testament to the effectiveness of collaboration between security agencies and the local community in tackling criminal activities.
