South Korean President, Yoon Suk Yeol, delivered a warning to the United Nations about the potential for arms deals between neighboring Russia and North Korea. During his speech at the UN General Debate in New York, Yoon expressed concerns that if North Korea were to receive technology to enhance its weapons of mass destruction in exchange for conventional weapons deliveries to Russia, it would be seen as a direct provocation. He emphasized that such a situation would not only endanger Ukraine’s security but also pose a threat to South Korea.
Yoon made it clear that South Korea, along with its allies and partners, would not remain passive if such actions were to occur. He accused North Korea of violating UN Security Council sanctions and pointed out the paradoxical nature of a permanent member of the council invading another sovereign nation, alluding to Russia’s actions.
The concerns raised by South Korea align with those expressed by the United States. Both countries have been vocal about their apprehension regarding Russian President Vladimir Putin’s recent negotiations with North Korean ruler Kim Jong Un. Putin’s discussions with Kim in Russia centered around the potential for expanding military-technical cooperation. Experts have warned that North Korea could provide artillery ammunition and missiles to support Russia’s involvement in the conflict with Ukraine. In return, the talks also reportedly discussed the transfer of advanced Russian military technologies to North Korea.
It is worth noting that Putin has stated that Russia would adhere to existing UN Security Council resolutions. However, South Korea remains vigilant and continues to voice its concerns about a potential weapons trade between Russia and North Korea.
By bringing attention to these possible deals, South Korea hopes to prevent any further destabilization in the region and protect its own security. The international community will closely monitor the situation as diplomatic efforts are made to address these concerns.
