The Comptroller General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, has called on Nigerians to have faith in the proficiency of customs officers when it comes to handling firearms.
During his address at the passing out parade of 956 new graduates in Kano, Adeniyi reassured the public, saying, “The days of our officers wielding weapons and inadvertently harming innocent Nigerians due to inadequate training are long behind us. This unfortunate scenario will not be repeated.”
Adeniyi emphasized that the newly recruited officers have undergone rigorous training in the responsible use of arms, with a clear focus on protecting Nigerians rather than causing harm. He added that their training encompassed various areas such as enforcement techniques, revenue management, valuation procedures, export and import regulations, passenger selection, parcel post, administration, and information technology.
The Commandant of the Customs School, R. A. Adahunse, disclosed that the recruits successfully mastered the drills and excelled in their academic activities in just six months.
Directly addressing the graduates, the Comptroller General highlighted their vital role in shaping the future of the organization. He reminded them of the merit-based selection process they had undergone, emerging as successful candidates among half a million applicants. He urged them to approach their duties with dedication, discipline, and unwavering integrity, emphasizing the importance of upholding these values.
“As customs officers, you are expected to serve our nation with utmost diligence and professionalism at all times. Your appearance should reflect the pride you take in your role. Strive for excellence and exhibit a spirit of service in all your interactions,” he urged.
Furthermore, Adeniyi stressed the significance of studying and adhering to the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), as they serve as a comprehensive guide to ensure the efficacy of customs operations.
