The United Nations’ Peace and Positive Living Awareness Center (UN-PEPOLAC) recently celebrated the 2023 World Peace Day in Anambra State, reinforcing their dedication to fostering global peace and prosperity. Governor Chukwuma Soludo, during the event, unveiled the UN Peace Alive Initiative, highlighting the crucial role that peace plays in the development and prosperity of the Southeast region.
Recognizing the significance of promoting peace and contributing to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Governor Soludo expressed his administration’s unwavering commitment to supporting peace initiatives.
Representing the governor at the ceremony was Kingsley Udemezue, a member of the Anambra State House of Assembly from the Idemili North Constituency.
Bishop Dr. Ozioma Ozoemena, the International Coordinator of UN-PEPOLAC, spoke passionately about the importance of collective action and the significance of World Peace Day. He stressed that the attainment of the SDGs, also known as Global Goals, begins with a resolute commitment to peace. Bishop Ozoemena called for unity across borders and boundaries to address the world’s most pressing challenges related to sustainable peace.
Dr. Innocent Akuvue, the Chairman of the occasion, emphasized the role of harmony in families and communities in achieving lasting peace. He advocated for the election of leaders who are dedicated to serving the community as a crucial step towards absolute peace in society.
Professor Ifejirika Echezona, the guest speaker, highlighted that peace encompasses the absence of strife, restiveness, and conflicts, while also encompassing order, social tranquillity, and harmony. He emphasized that the greatest value of peace in any human society lies in its ability to guarantee security, human well-being, and economic development. Without peace, the quality of life on Earth would be profoundly affected.
In commemoration of World Peace Day, observed globally on September 21st, the event’s theme was “Action for Peace, Our Ambition for the Global Goals.” The gathering served as a platform for government officials, civil society organizations, students, religious leaders, and community members to engage in discussions concerning the profound connection between peace and the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, SDGs.
