Renowned skit maker Steve Chuks, popularly known for his character ‘Madam Gold,’ opens up about society’s tendency to label him as gay due to his portrayal of women in his skits.

In a candid interview on the Toke Moments podcast, hosted by actress Toke Makinwa, Chuks revealed that he has often been approached by gay men who make assumptions about his sexuality based on his comedic performances.

Setting the record straight, Chuks emphasized that wearing female attire in his skits does not imply that he is gay. He expressed his frustration with the stereotypes attached to men who embrace diverse gender roles and challenged the derogatory mindset prevalent in Nigerian society.

Chuks shared his experience, saying, “One thing I don’t like is how people stereotype men who wear female clothes. What I’m doing now, it immediately feels like I’m a certain thing. Have I told you anything? Did I tell you that I was anything?”

He went on to recount encounters with gay men who approached him, suggesting a potential romantic interest. Chuks expressed perplexity, questioning whether his portrayal of the character ‘Madam Gold’ was causing the confusion. He clarified that he is not dressed as ‘Madam Gold’ at all times and urged others not to make assumptions without any basis.

Furthermore, Chuks shed light on the double standards prevalent in society. While men who wear women’s clothing are often stigmatized, there seems to be no criticism directed towards women who wear men’s clothing.

“Why is it a problem? Why can’t you just enjoy the comedy and the clothing?” Chuks questioned, highlighting the need for a more open-minded approach towards different expressions of gender in the entertainment industry.

Chuks drew attention to fellow comedian Josh2funny, who altered his choice of costumes after getting married, likely in response to societal pressures and judgments. The skit maker expressed disappointment at society’s tendency to judge individuals solely based on their appearance and called for acceptance and appreciation of comedy for what it is.

This conversation with Steve Chuks serves as a reminder that breaking free from societal stereotypes is crucial, as it allows individuals to express themselves authentically without fear of judgment.
