The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, extends his heartfelt congratulations to the newly elected leaders of the Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures in Nigeria.
The Speaker also extends his felicitations to the All Progressives Congress (APC) Conference of Speakers and the Northern Speakers Forum for the successful elections of new leaders during the recently concluded annual general meeting (AGM).
Speaker Abbas commends the state’s assemblies’ presiding officers for their commendable conduct during the election process. He further calls upon the conference members to collectively and individually uphold the independence of the legislature, as it stands as the embodiment of democracy in their respective states.
Emphasizing the significance of legislative independence, the Speaker highlights the indispensable role played by the lawmaking bodies across all levels of government. He stresses the necessity of checks and balances to uphold democratic principles and ensure effective governance.
Furthermore, the Speaker reminds the new leaders of their responsibility to hold their executive branches accountable to the people through rigorous oversight, stating, “that can only be possible if you enjoy complete constitutional autonomy.”
The Speaker expresses his confidence in the collective experiences of the new chairpersons of the national, regional, and party forums of Speakers. He believes they will collaboratively elevate the status and democratic credentials of state legislatures to new, enviable heights.
The Speaker extends his wishes for successful tenures to the new leadership of the three bodies of state assembly Speakers, while urging them to demonstrate exemplary leadership in their positions.
The election took place during the congress of the national body. The newly elected Chairman of the Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures of Nigeria is Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin, the Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly. The Speaker of Katsina State House of Assembly, Alhaji Nasir Yahaya-Daura, has been elected as the Deputy Chairman.
In a related development, the Chairman of the APC Conference of Speakers is Hon. Yakubu Danladi-Salihu, the Speaker of the Kwara State House of Assembly. The Northern Speakers’ Forum is chaired by Hon. Yusuf Liman Dahiru, the Speaker of the Kaduna State House of Assembly.
