A prominent human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, has called for a thorough investigation into the tragic death of Adebola Akin-Bright, a young boy from Lagos State who allegedly had his intestine removed during a surgical procedure at a local hospital.

In a heartfelt plea, Mrs. Deborah Abiodun, the mother of the 13-year-old, shared that her son’s intestines were taken out while undergoing surgery at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH).

In response to these allegations, LASUTH has categorically denied any wrongdoing, asserting that no organs were removed during the corrective surgery performed on Adebola. The hospital clarified that the teenager had previously undergone an operation at a private medical facility in Lagos.

Despite the efforts of doctors and the intervention of Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Adebola tragically passed away two days ago at LASUTH.

Highlighting the seriousness of the situation, Falana and Falana’s Chambers have penned a letter to the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, urging him to uncover the truth behind these distressing events.

Barr. Taiwo Olawanle, the signatory of the letter, emphasized that Falana’s Chambers is a legal firm deeply committed to the protection of human rights. The letter expressed grave concerns about the untimely and avoidable death of young Adebola.

The letter reads: “We have been informed of the unfortunate demise of Master Adebola Akin-Bright, who suffered complications arising from a surgical procedure conducted on him at a private hospital in Lagos a few weeks ago.”

The mother of the deceased boy, Mrs. Deborah Abiodun, had previously reported the alleged disappearance of her son’s small intestine during his treatment at the aforementioned private hospital on September 1, 2023.

In light of the circumstances surrounding this tragic loss, Falana’s Chambers humbly implores the Lagos State Commissioner of Police to exercise their authority, as bestowed by the Police Act, and diligently investigate the circumstances leading to the death of this young and promising boy.”
