The House of Representatives has announced that it will resume its plenary sessions on Tuesday, September 26, 2023, marking the continuation of the first legislative year of the 10th Assembly after its annual recess. This news was conveyed to lawmakers by Dr. Yahaya Danzaria, the clerk of the House, as stated in a press release issued by the House spokesperson, Akin Rotimi.
The 10th Assembly had commenced its break on Thursday, July 27, 2023, following a plenary session during which the Honourable Speaker, Tajudeen Abbas, announced the leadership of the standing committees of the House. Now, after a productive 100 days since its inauguration, the 10th Assembly has witnessed the first reading of 470 bills, with four bills passing the second reading. Additionally, the House has considered 175 motions, highlighting its commitment to addressing key issues affecting the nation.
As the House prepares to resume its legislative activities, Rotimi has outlined some of the key developments that are expected to take place. The first is the conclusion of the work of all ad hoc committees and the submission of their reports for the consideration of the House, in accordance with the directives of the Rt. Honourable Speaker. This signifies the House’s dedication to fulfilling its responsibilities and ensuring effective legislative processes.
Furthermore, the House will deliberate on the final draft of the Legislative Agenda, which was developed by the ad hoc committee led by House Leader, Hon. Prof. Julius Inhonvbere. This draft agenda has been carefully crafted through extensive consultations with critical stakeholders, ensuring that the House’s legislative priorities align with the needs and aspirations of the Nigerian people. Following the adoption of the Legislative Agenda, the House will announce and fully constitute the membership of the standing committees, a crucial step towards effective governance.
The resumption of the House of Representatives signifies a renewed commitment to addressing the nation’s needs. With its legislative agenda in place and standing committees fully constituted, the House is poised to tackle pressing issues and pave the way for meaningful progress and development in Nigeria.
