Former Arsenal player, Adrian Clarke, has expressed his belief that the Gunners made a mistake by not signing James Maddison and instead opting for Kai Havertz.
In Clarke’s opinion, Maddison would have been a more suitable addition to Arsenal’s squad than Havertz.
This revelation comes just before Arsenal’s Premier League derby match against Tottenham on Sunday.
It is worth noting that Maddison completed a transfer to Tottenham from Leicester City during the summer transfer window, while Havertz joined Arsenal from Chelsea.
During an episode of the Handbrake Off Podcast (as reported by TBR), Clarke shared his thoughts, saying, “Spurs will definitely pose a challenge for us, but I believe we have the superior players. I wouldn’t choose to have many of their players on our team. I’m not a fan of creating combined XIs. Although Spurs have the potential to beat us, I can only see one player from their team, Maddison for Havertz, who would make it into our starting lineup at the moment.
“Personally, I have always admired Maddison, and I think he would have been a better fit for the left-sided number 10/8 position than Kai Havertz. Maddison has quickly settled in at Tottenham and has proven to be a steal in terms of value for money. I would have been very interested in signing him, without a doubt.”
