Oyebanji Inaugurates Farmer-Herder Peace Committee to Enhance Conducive Agricultural Environment

The Governor of Ekiti State, Biodun Oyebanji, has taken a proactive step towards creating a conducive environment for sustainable agricultural activities by reconstituting the state’s Farmer-Herder Peace Committee. This move is part of the government’s efforts to mitigate conflicts between farmers and herders and ensure greater productivity in crop and livestock agriculture.

The inauguration of the committee took place at the Governor’s Office in Ado Ekiti, where Oyebanji highlighted the initiative’s potential to transform the agricultural sector and boost food security in the state. He acknowledged that the committee was initially constituted during the previous administration, making Ekiti the first state in the Southwest geopolitical zone to establish an effective conflict resolution mechanism.

Furthermore, Governor Oyebanji emphasized that attracting private investors to develop the agricultural sub-sector is crucial for both economic growth and job creation. Hence, the reconstitution of the committee aims to create a conducive business environment and provide a clear direction for its operations.

While commending the dissolved committee for its contributions to maintaining relative peace and tranquility among farmers and herders, Oyebanji acknowledged that challenges such as farm destruction, farmland degradation, water pollution, farm grazing, and physical attacks still persist. These issues not only have the potential to escalate into violent crises but also threaten peace and food security in the state.

Governor Oyebanji expressed the need to reverse the trend of kidnappings, with some herders suspected or arrested as culprits. His administration is determined to prevent an atmosphere of chaos, vengeance, retribution, and lawlessness. Therefore, reconstituting the committee will enable it to respond effectively to the urgent realities of today.

The newly formed committee includes stakeholders from various sectors, such as cattle breeders, herdsmen, farmers, security outfits, drivers’ unions, market women, traditional rulers, and youths. Oyebanji emphasized that it is crucial to sustain the confidence of agricultural business owners and other stakeholders by ensuring their investments are secure in Ekiti.

Moreover, the Governor assured the public that the committee, led by the Special Adviser on Security Matters, Retired Brigadier General Ebenezer Ogundana, and other esteemed individuals, will handle conflict resolution assignments fairly and proactively. Additionally, Oyebanji pledged to strengthen the collaboration and effectiveness of security outfits, including the Amotekun and the anti-grazing corps, especially in rural areas.

In conclusion, the reconstitution of the Farmer-Herder Peace Committee in Ekiti State demonstrates the government’s commitment to promoting harmony between farmers and herders. By addressing conflicts and creating a conducive agricultural environment, the state aims to boost productivity, food security, and economic growth.
