The Minister of State for Education, Dr. Yusuf Sununu, has affirmed the Nigerian government’s commitment to supporting the Global Partnership for Education (GPE) programs in order to achieve rapid growth in the education sector.
This declaration was made during a meeting between Dr. Sununu and officials from the GPE, led by Morten Sisgaard, the Senior Education Specialist and Country Team Lead from the Republic of Denmark.
Dr. Sununu emphasized that the administration led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has a clear vision for the education sector, which includes providing quality, accessible, and affordable education for all Nigerians. He further stated that the government is thinking outside the box to deliver on its promises to the sector.
In a statement by Minister Ben Goong’s press director, Dr. Sununu assured that the Tinubu administration possesses the political will and determination to make a positive impact across the sector.
Morten Sisgaard, the leader of the delegation, informed the minister about the GPE’s key programs in Nigeria, including a $100 million partnership project (2015 – 2020), aimed at improving access to and quality of basic education in Kastina, Kano, Kaduna (KK States), as well as Jigawa and Sokoto States.
He further highlighted other programs, such as the COVID-19 response grant of $15 million and an accelerated funding of $20 million, specifically targeted at addressing emerging challenges in delivering quality education in the fragile states of Borno, Yobe, and Adamawa. Additionally, he mentioned the $125 million education sector implementation grant for transforming education systems at the state level, $15.4 million for reaching out to school children in Kaduna State, and $117.59 million for system transformation grants.
Accompanying Morten Sigsaard on the working visit were Mr. Ian Attfield, Senior Education Advisor at the British High Commission in Abuja, and Dilip Parajuli, a Senior Economist and Education Specialist at the World Bank.
