Kano Governorship Elections Judgement: NNPP Petitions NJC Against Justice Anya

The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has filed a petition with the Nigeria Judicial Council (NJC) regarding what it perceives as unfavorable remarks made against the party and its Kwankwasiyya followers during the judgement on the Kano governorship elections.

One of the judges, Justice Benson Anya, was quoted as saying in his submission at the Tribunal that, “rather than allow some politicians to cause violence and banditry in Kano, it is better to use justice to stop them”.

The Chairman of the NNPP in Kano State, Hashimu Dungurawa, alleges that this remark demonstrates that justice was not served to the NNPP due to bias, rather than the merits of their case.

Dungurawa strongly objects to such language, which he deems inappropriate for a Judge and defender of the law.

“The indecorous, libelous, and entirely condemnable comments attributed to the panel, particularly the portions where Justice Benson Anya overstepped his judicial boundaries of immunity and acted as if he had a personal interest in the matter by casting aspersions on the leadership and members of the NNPP, are baseless, regrettable, uncivilized, and driven by bias,” said Dungurawa.

He added, “We are taking our petition against Justice Anya and his remarks to the NJC, and we will find out whether he was justified in using personal sentiments to dismiss our victory and seek justice in this matter.”
