The governor of Akwa Ibom State, Pastor Umo Eno, has urged those seeking election as local government chairmen under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to carefully consider if zoning is in their favor before deciding to contest.
During a Media Parley held at the Government House in Uyo over the weekend, Governor Eno stressed that he himself is a product of zoning and therefore, would not go against the tide if zoning does not favor any candidate, regardless of their influence or assistance at the grassroots level.
In addition, the governor reminded the prospective local government chairmen about a legislation, enacted by the House of Assembly, that mandates them to reside in their respective council areas. He emphasized his commitment to ensure strict implementation of this law.
“I will not fight against zoning because I’m a product of zoning. If zoning does not favor you, don’t expect me to try and change that or to exert pressure on anyone,” Governor Eno stated.
Referring to the bill passed by the House of Assembly, the governor further emphasized, “If you aspire to be a local government chairman, you must be aware of the residency requirement. This legislation is a law, and I will ensure its enforcement. By living in your council areas, you will be able to meaningfully engage the youth and oversee grassroots development.”
Governor Eno also discussed his plans to construct a Leisure/Amusement Park for children to unwind and play during holidays. He noted that the project will be self-sustaining.
“How many people can afford to take their children on vacation? However, with our Leisure Park, individuals will be able to spend quality time with their children at an affordable cost, without the need to travel abroad,” the governor explained.
Addressing reports of politicians facing financial constraints, Governor Eno stated that he is prioritizing a reduction in recurrent expenditure in order to allocate more funds to capital expenditure. He emphasized that the money saved will be reinvested in rural areas, stating, “Every N500 million I save will enable me to build a school or a hospital.”
Furthermore, the governor expressed his preference for a successful first term over two ineffective terms.
“Only when you account well for a four-year term will you be asked to serve again. I would rather invest in rural communities. My duty is to ensure the satisfaction of the 7.9 million people living in Akwa Ibom State. I have found that almost everyone is relying on the government,” Governor Eno remarked.
