The National Election Authority of Egypt has announced that the country’s presidential election will take place in December. According to the electoral body, the presidential poll will be conducted over three consecutive days starting on December 10. Egyptians residing outside the country will also have the opportunity to cast their ballots over three days, beginning on December 1.

Key Dates and Procedures

Candidacy registration for the election is set to open on October 5 and will run until October 14. The final list of candidates will be released on November 19. The official announcement of the final election results is scheduled for December 18.

Walid Hamza, the head of the National Election Authority, has assured the public that the election will be fair and conducted under the full supervision of the judiciary. Hamza emphasized the importance of voter participation, urging Egyptians to exercise their democratic right and shape their own destiny by casting their votes.

It is estimated that approximately 65 million Egyptians are eligible to vote in this election, making it a significant opportunity for citizens to have a say in the governance of their country.

Incumbent President Expected to Run for Re-election

While current President Abdel-Fattah al-Sissi has not officially announced his candidacy, it is widely anticipated that he will run for another term. Al-Sissi has ruled Egypt since 2014 and, following his re-election in 2018, his current term will conclude in April next year.

Approved amendments to Egypt’s 2014 constitution allow al-Sissi to run for one additional six-year term. Several leaders from political parties loyal to al-Sissi have already declared their intention to stand for president. However, opposition politician Ahmed al-Tanatawi, a former lawmaker, has also announced his candidacy and has claimed that security agencies have arrested some of his supporters.

The upcoming presidential election is taking place against the backdrop of an economic crisis in Egypt, a country with a population of approximately 105 million people. As the electoral process unfolds, all eyes will be on the nation to witness the outcome that will determine the future leadership and direction of Egypt.
