The Nigerian Army has categorically denied allegations of corruption and diversion of troops’ Ration Cash Allowance (RCA) at the Zungeru Hydroelectric Dam project in Niger State. The reports, circulating online, claimed that soldiers providing security for Chinese nationals working at the dam had not received their RCA for three months.

The Director of Army Public Relations, Brigadier General Onyema Nwachukwu, issued a statement in response, emphasizing that the welfare of troops is of utmost importance to the Army. Refuting the insinuations made in the online reports, he clarified that troops deployed at the Chinese company in Niger are paid in installments upon receipt of funds from the relevant institution.

“The last installment of RCA payment to the troops was completed on 28 February, and the next installment is currently being processed,” stated Brigadier General Nwachukwu. He further added that the Army Headquarters had already paid the troops for the period from March to June to improve their operating conditions and bring them in line with deployments elsewhere.

Commitment to Welfare

The Nigerian Army, under the leadership of Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, places great emphasis on welfare as a vital pillar of their Command Philosophy. Their aim is to provide “Sound Administration” for the personnel of the Nigerian Army.

Zero Tolerance for Financial Misappropriation

The statement from the Nigerian Army expressed understanding for the concerns raised by the online media but firmly reiterated the Army’s zero tolerance policy towards any form of financial misappropriation. The Army is committed to maintaining high morale among its troops and vehemently opposes any actions that may undermine their welfare.

To mitigate the impact of the installment-based payment system, provisions have been made to ensure that the troops are fed daily. The Army clarified that the troops’ RCA was not diverted by any of the senior officers named in the publication or by anyone else, as erroneously portrayed.

Integrity, Transparency, and Accountability

The Nigerian Army affirms its commitment to upholding integrity, transparency, and accountability in the administration of troops’ welfare in all operations and endeavors. These principles are embedded in the Command Philosophy of the Chief of Army Staff, who aims to transform the Nigerian Army into a well-trained, equipped, and highly motivated force capable of fulfilling its constitutional responsibilities within a joint environment.

“The Nigerian Army recognizes the importance of ensuring the welfare and well-being of its personnel, as it significantly impacts their overall morale,” concluded the statement.
