The Nigerian Senate is set to commence the screening process for the nomination of the former Chairman of the Board of Citi Bank Nigeria, Dr. Olayemi Michael Cardoso, as the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). This event is scheduled to take place on Tuesday.

In addition to Dr. Cardoso, the Senate will also conduct the screening of four nominees for the positions of CBN Deputy Governors. These individuals, if confirmed, will work alongside Dr. Cardoso for the next five years to manage the affairs of the apex bank.

The Media Office of the Senate Leader, Senator Michael Opeyemi Bamidele, released a statement confirming the upcoming screening exercise. According to the statement, the Senate will carry out the screening process after resuming from its annual recess.

The statement read: “The Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria will reconvene for plenary on Tuesday, September 26. During this session, we will conduct the screening of Dr. Cardoso at the Committee of the whole.”

“Dr. Cardoso will be screened alongside the four deputy governors, namely Mrs. Emem Nnana Usoro, Mr. Muhammad Sani Abdullahi Dattijo, Mr. Philip Ikeazor, and Dr. Bala M. Bello.

“Furthermore, the Senate has scheduled the screening of the ministerial nominees – Dr. Jamila Bio Ibrahim and Mr. Ayodele Olawande, who have been designated as the Minister of Youth and Minister of State for Youth, respectively, on October 3.”

On September 15, President Tinubu announced the nomination of Dr. Cardoso as the new Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN). Additionally, the President also approved the nomination of four individuals to serve as deputy governors for a term of five years each, pending confirmation by the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
