The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has reassured the people of Kogi State that the forthcoming governorship election will reflect their true desires. Dr. Hale Gabriel Longpet, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Kogi State, made this known during a productive engagement with media executives in the state.
Emphasizing the commission’s commitment to a free, fair, and transparent election, the REC stated that INEC is determined to change the negative perceptions associated with elections in Kogi State. He urged political parties to focus their campaigns and debates on substantive issues rather than resorting to baseless allegations. Additionally, the media was implored to play its role in enlightening and sensitizing the public about the importance of collecting their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).
Highlighting the crucial role of the media in ensuring a credible and transparent electoral process, the REC urged journalists not to engage in any activities that could undermine the integrity of the election.
It is noteworthy that the Commission has meticulously followed all the necessary processes leading up to a successful election. On October 12 and 16, INEC will announce the date of the governorship election, with a mock election scheduled for October 14 to test the reliability of the electoral procedures.
During the engagement, Adeiza Momohjimoh, the Chairman of Kogi State Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), assured that working journalists in the state will uphold professionalism throughout the electoral process and beyond.
Speaking at the event, Prof. Kunle Ajayi, the National Commissioner for INEC, stressed the importance of the media’s professionalism and adherence to the principle of ballot secrecy. He made it clear that the announcement of the election results is exclusively the responsibility of the Commission.
With this level of assurance from INEC, Kogi State residents can be confident that their votes will count in the upcoming governorship election, as the commission strives to set a new standard of transparency and credibility.
