The Ministry of Defence (MoD) has categorically denied allegations that the Nigerian federal government is negotiating with the Zamfara terrorists in order to secure the safe release of the abducted students from the Federal University, Gusau. In a statement released on Tuesday in Abuja, Hope Attari, the Acting Director of Press and Public Relations for the MoD, clarified the government’s position on the matter.
Reacting to statements attributed to a governor suggesting negotiations with the terrorists, the Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru, strongly condemned the act and reassured the people of Zamfara state that the federal government is making every effort to secure the girls’ release. He emphasized that President Bola Tinubu has given clear instructions to the military and other security agencies to ensure the safe return of those who have been abducted.
In no uncertain terms, the Minister affirmed that the Nigerian government is not engaging in negotiations with the Zamfara terrorists regarding the release of the abducted students. He further emphasized that the government is tirelessly working towards the safe return of the girls and others who have been taken captive.
Mr. Badaru stated, “The allegation is false and misleading as the ministry has not authorized any individual or group to negotiate on behalf of the Federal Government.”
He went on to reassure the residents of Zamfara state, as well as Nigerians nationwide, about the tireless efforts being made to swiftly bring back the female students and others from the Federal University, Gusau.
The Minister expressed confidence in the discreet round-the-clock operations of the joint security task force, assuring the public that they are working diligently to successfully rescue the students.
On a somber note, Mr. Badaru extended his heartfelt condolences to the parents, the academic community, and the entire population of the state for the tragic abduction. However, he also shared some positive news, stating that as a result of the President’s directive, 13 of the abducted students and 3 others were fortunate enough to regain their freedom on Monday.
“This commendable feat was achieved due to the professional efforts of our military,” the Minister remarked. “To the families of the girls and others who have been abducted, I offer my deepest condolences. I share in your pain and vehemently condemn this reprehensible act executed by suspected bandits,” he continued.
