The Speaker of the Anambra State House of Assembly, Right Honourable Somtochukwu Udeze, has announced a collaboration between the Eight Assembly and the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in the enactment of quality laws to promote good governance.
This announcement was made during a courtesy visit by the executive members and stakeholders of the union to the State legislative complex in Awka.
In recognizing the vital role of journalists, Speaker Udeze commended them for their dedication to their responsibilities. He emphasized that the State Government prioritizes the welfare of workers and is committed to creating an enabling environment for enhanced productivity.
To ensure good governance in Anambra State, Speaker Udeze urged the union to contribute ideas on how the Assembly can better serve the state. He stated, “The House is in the process of enacting laws that will curb anti-touting activities in Anambra, address revenue leakages, and improve local government administration.”
The speaker also emphasized the importance of continuous training for the state legislators to equip them with the necessary skills for effective legislative duties. “We have 22 new legislators out of 33 members, so training is crucial to acquaint them with the proper way to legislate,” he reiterated.
Dr. Emeka Odogwu, Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Anambra State Council, expressed appreciation to Speaker Udeze for his accountability and commended the ongoing renovation works at the legislative complex.
In the spirit of partnership, the council is planning a two-day symposium between NUJ and members of the Anambra State House of Assembly to explore better ways of reporting the activities of the House. Dr. Odogwu implored the support of the House in this endeavor.
During the vote of thanks, Comrade Okechukwu Obenta, a veteran member of the union, emphasized the need for the Anambra State Government to provide a monthly subvention to support the union in organizing regular training workshops for its members. He noted that adequate training of journalists would bring Anambra State to the limelight in areas requiring federal government intervention, such as ecological disasters.
Also present to receive the NUJ entourage were Hon Ikenna Ofodeme, the Majority Leader of the House representing Ekwusigo Constituency, and Honourable Nigeria Mbachu, the Chairman of the Committee on Culture, Arts, and Tourism, representing Awka South 1.
