Tinubu approves acquisition of 12 attack helicopters to strengthen Nigerian Army

President Bola Tinubu has authorized the purchase of 12 attack helicopters to bolster the capabilities of the Nigerian Army.

During the inaugural Nigerian Army Aviation Seminar held in Abuja on Tuesday, Lieutenant General Taoreed Lagbaja, the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), disclosed this information.

The procurement of 12 MD 530F Cayuse attack helicopters will establish the Nigerian Army Aviation unit, enhancing the agility, responsiveness, and effectiveness of ground troops during military operations.

In addition, the COAS highlighted that these helicopters would contribute to the operational success of joint and coalition troops.

Lagbaja explained that an Army aviation unit is distinct from a nation’s dedicated Airforce, as it is equipped with helicopters and light support fixed-wing aircraft.

He expressed gratitude to the President for recognizing the importance of an equipped aviation unit in supporting ground troops during tactical and operational engagements.

The insights gained from nations such as the United States, Pakistan, Colombia, Egypt, Kenya, Ethiopia, and Uganda serve as valuable guidance in this regard.
