The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) have jointly declared an indefinite strike, set to commence on October 3rd, 2023. The announcement was made following the National Executive Council meetings of both unions in Abuja.
During a press briefing held in Abuja, NLC President Joe Ajaero expressed that the decision to embark on an indefinite strike became unavoidable due to the government’s lackadaisical approach in meeting the demands raised by the unions.
In light of the government’s stance on the subsidy removal policy, Ajaero emphasized that both unions’ executive councils were left with no choice but to call for an indefinite strike. The unions believe that this will send a strong message to the government and compel them to address their demands.
Similarly, Trade Union Congress President Festus Osifo stated that, starting from October 3rd, all workers are expected to withdraw their services as part of the strike action.
This development marks a significant escalation in the ongoing labour dispute between the unions and the government. The NLC and TUC firmly believe that this strike will serve as a catalyst for meaningful negotiations and ultimately lead to the resolution of the issues at hand.
