The Governor of Ekiti State, Mr Biodun Oyebanji, has issued a stern warning to public servants, cautioning them against engaging in fraudulent activities that could tarnish the reputation of the state. Governor Oyebanji recently recalled the General Manager of the State’s Sports Council, Mr Adekunle Adeyemi, from the sports festival in Asaba due to allegations of corruption and gross negligence.
Poorly Equipped Athletes Spark Controversy
Speaking on the issue, Governor Oyebanji stated that he had approved the sum of N20 million for the ongoing seventh Junior National Sports Festival taking place in Asaba. However, he expressed disappointment in the poor state of the athletes’ kits provided by government officials. The governor raised concerns about why the athletes representing Ekiti State were not properly equipped.
A Cautionary Message to Divided Communities
In addition to addressing the sports festival controversy, Governor Oyebanji also cautioned communities in Ekiti State that are engaged in disputes over the siting of the Federal College of Education. He emphasized that he, as the governor, does not have the power to manipulate the process in favor of any particular town. The governor stressed that the Federal Government reserves the exclusive right to determine the location of the institution.
Town Hall Meeting for Stakeholder Engagement
During a town hall meeting held in Ikere Ekiti, as part of preparations for the 2024 budget, Governor Oyebanji promised to carefully consider all issues presented by representatives from local councils. The governor expressed his commitment to improving the quality of life for the people of Ekiti State.
Action to Be Taken Against Wrongdoers
Addressing the sporting event controversy, Governor Oyebanji voiced his disappointment, calling it an embarrassment to the government and the people of Ekiti State. The governor highlighted that certain individuals had attempted to deceive him by providing kits only for his inspection, while neglecting to properly equip the athletes representing the state. He also revealed that the athletes did not receive suitable accommodation during their stay in Delta State. Governor Oyebanji expressed his determination to take decisive action against all those involved in the matter.
Avoiding Divisiveness During Crisis
Regarding the dispute over the siting of the Federal College of Education in Ekiti State, Governor Oyebanji sought to clarify the state’s position. He emphasized that the decision ultimately rests with the Federal Government and should not be used as a cause for division among communities. The governor urged the communities of Ilawe and Omuo to maintain harmony, reminding them that ultimately, both towns are part of Ekiti State.
Engaging with The Community for Prudent Resource Allocation
Governor Oyebanji further explained that the purpose of gathering requests from communities and local governments is to ensure proper allocation of the limited funds available to the state. He expressed his commitment to prioritizing the needs of the people and managing the resources prudently and accurately.
