The Chief Executive of Nigeria’s Bank of Industry (BoI), Olukayode Pitan, was recently presented with the prestigious Special African Banking Leadership Commendation Award. The award was bestowed upon him during the 9th edition of the International Forum on African-Caribbean Leadership (IFAL), held on the sidelines of the 78th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) at the New York Hilton Midtown.
The event, which focused on the theme of “African-Caribbean Cooperation and Today’s Geopolitics,” brought together policymakers, business leaders, and diplomats from Africa, the Caribbean, and beyond. It provided a platform for discussions on the progress and challenges facing African and Caribbean nations, as well as opportunities for trans-regional cooperation, trade, and investment.
Mr. Pitan’s recognition stems from his outstanding contributions to the growth and development of Nigeria’s industrial sector. As the Managing Director and CEO of BoI, Nigeria’s oldest and largest development finance institution, he has utilized his extensive experience in the banking and capital markets to fulfill the bank’s mandate.
BoI, under Mr. Pitan’s leadership, has played a pivotal role in transforming Nigeria’s industrial landscape by providing affordable long-term financing and counter-cyclical loans across various sectors of the economy. Over the past five years, under his guidance, the bank has successfully raised approximately $5 billion through syndications and bonds in the international market. This has not only bolstered Nigeria’s economic development but also fostered financial inclusion by supporting the growth of over 3 million enterprises, resulting in the creation of more than 7 million jobs.
The African Banking Leadership Commendation Award serves as a testament to Mr. Pitan’s commitment and dedication to Nigeria’s industrial progress. He was honored alongside esteemed individuals such as the President of Guyana and high-level policymakers from various countries.
The International Forum on African-Caribbean Leadership has become an essential platform for connecting global leaders, policymakers, and business professionals. It facilitates strategic partnerships, bilateral cooperation, and discussions on sectors like trade, investment, technology transfer, culture, and tourism. By fostering dialogue and cooperation between nations, the forum strives to promote sustainable development and prosperity for Africa and the Caribbean.
Mr. Pitan’s recognition at this prestigious international event highlights the impact of his leadership and the Bank of Industry’s contribution to Nigeria’s industrial growth. It also underscores the importance of ongoing collaboration and cooperation between African and Caribbean nations in today’s interconnected world.
