The Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has officially launched the construction of a six-lane road project in Umuahia with the aim of promoting development in the state capital. As part of this project, the demolition of marked structures along the proposed road has already commenced.
In his address during the flag-off ceremony, Governor Otti emphasized that the road expansion aligns with his administration’s vision to transform Umuahia into a modern and vibrant city. He believes that upon completion, the road will give the capital a new facelift and enhance its aesthetic appeal.
During the planning phase of the project, Governor Otti encountered various challenges. One such challenge arose from villagers who requested permission to exhume and rebury their deceased relatives. However, despite these obstacles, Otti assured the citizens of Abia that the owners of the 130 structures identified for demolition have been duly compensated.
Eze Emelike Chiabuotu of Ossah community expressed his appreciation to the governor for initiating a major road project that will greatly impact his kingdom. He firmly believes that once completed, the road will transform the area significantly.
In the meantime, bulldozers from the Abia State Ministry of Works and officials from the Umuahia Capital Development Authority (UCDA) have mobilized to begin the demolition of the marked structures. The demolition squad, coordinated by the Ministry of Works, has started its operation at the Okigwe Motor Park next to Michael Okpara Square. Witnesses observed the heavy-duty equipment demolishing the buildings, while affected property owners hurriedly salvaged their valuables from the affected houses.
Many owners of the demolished structures, particularly those at Okigwe Motor Park, were visibly distraught and shed tears as they witnessed their properties being crushed by the bulldozers.
