Former Legislators Condemn Impeachment Process against Ondo Deputy Governor, Aiyedatiwa

Several former members of the Ondo State House of Assembly have expressed their strong disapproval of the impeachment process initiated by the state legislature against the Deputy Governor of Ondo State, Lucky Aiyedatiwa.

The concerned ex-lawmakers, who belong to the Concerned All Progressives Congress’ Ex-Lawmakers in Ondo State, have raised concerns about the premature focus on impeachment by the 10th Assembly, while ignoring the numerous challenges currently facing the state.

Upholding Proper Procedures

During a press briefing held in Akure, Abiodun Jerome, spokesperson for the concerned former lawmakers, stressed the need for the state assembly to adhere to proper procedures and cautioned against stirring unrest within the state.

Jerome underscored the importance of the House of Assembly maintaining its integrity and avoiding distractions. He emphasized the significance of upholding the principle of separation of powers, reminding the Assembly members of the global scrutiny they are currently under.

Appeal for Restraint and Fairness

The group appealed to the House of Assembly to exercise restraint, due diligence, and ensure a fair and transparent handling of the impeachment process.

They urged the Assembly to prioritize addressing the pressing issues affecting the state and its citizens, instead of solely focusing their energies on the impeachment proceedings.

“As former lawmakers, it is our responsibility to highlight any abnormalities we observe, so that the general public is not misled,” said the group in a joint statement.

“Although we could have chosen to ignore the political maneuverings behind this audacious act, we are compelled by the trust we once held as representatives of our respective constituencies.”

Setting a Precedent

The group challenged the current Assembly not to endorse a detrimental precedent by proceeding with the planned impeachment of the deputy governor.

“This is one impeachment too many! Today it is Lucky; tomorrow it could be anyone. There is life after the House of Assembly. A word is enough for the wise!” the group concluded.
