The Labour Party has called on its supporters nationwide to make necessary preparations in anticipation of the proposed indefinite strike by organized labour.
According to Media Talk Africa, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) plan to shut down the country’s economy on October 3 in a bid to address the need for improved working conditions.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by the National Publicity Secretary of the Labour Party, Obiora Ifoh, the party expressed its full support for the proposed indefinite strike.
The party criticized President Bola Tinubu’s administration, accusing it of negligence towards the challenges facing the nation following the removal of fuel subsidy.
Highlighting the economic realities in the country, the party noted that some parents were unable to pay their children’s school fees due to financial hardships.
Part of the statement read, “The party fully supports the resolution of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) to embark on an industrial action slated to commence on Tuesday, October 3rd.”
“Labour Party is surprised that the government claims to have removed subsidies on petroleum products and currently generates over a trillion naira monthly, yet struggles to address workers’ demands.”
“Every day, Nigerians face harsh economic realities: an inflation rate nearing 30 per cent, a dollar value above N1000, and a decrease in per capita income.”
“Many families are withdrawing their children from schools due to increased school fees, while criminal activities continue to rise.”
“We believe that Nigerian workers have demonstrated enough patience and understanding. We are also using this opportunity to advise all our members and supporters to stock up on essential supplies for their homes, in preparation for a long-lasting mass action until victory is achieved. There will be no retreat, no surrender.”
