The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) in Nigeria has emphasized the need for a societal approach in the ongoing battle against insurgency in the country. Major General Edward Buba, the Director of Defence Media Operations, made this statement during a press briefing in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.
General Buba highlighted the fact that the individuals perpetrating acts of insecurity are not anonymous ghosts, but rather individuals with families and connections within local communities and villages across the country.
He stressed that countering terrorists, insurgents, and those involved in the promotion of insecurity should not be the sole responsibility of the military. He stressed that experience has shown that military action alone is insufficient to neutralize terrorism and insurgency effectively.
General Edward Buba explained, “Recognizing this reality, there are numerous ways in which society can demonstrate its commitment to support the overall objective of defeating terrorism and insurgency in the country.”
He added, “Importantly, this commitment should be in alignment with the will of the people.”
Providing an update on recent military operations, Major General Buba announced that the military neutralized 191 terrorists, arrested 184 terrorists and 22 individuals involved in oil theft, and successfully rescued 91 kidnapped hostages. He also mentioned that a significant number of 104 Boko Haram/ISWAP militants and their families willingly surrendered to troops across various Operation theaters.
The director further revealed that troops in the Niger Delta region discovered and destroyed 38 dugout pits, 21 boats, and 57 storage tanks, among other accomplishments.
Addressing these individuals and groups, he firmly stated that the military is unwavering in its commitment to pursuing peace and bringing to justice those who threaten the peace and security of the nation.
The briefing concluded with a moment of silence to honour the officers who lost their lives while defending the nation.
