The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, has called on the government of the People’s Republic of China to collaborate with Nigeria in identifying and addressing tendencies that promote xenophobic attacks globally.

Speaking at China’s 74th National Day celebrations in Abuja, Hon. Kalu expressed his admiration for the diplomatic and trade ties between both nations. He highlighted the cultural exchanges that have fostered a deep understanding and appreciation of each other’s heritage.

Hon. Kalu emphasized how these ties have accelerated Nigeria’s industrial development, citing notable projects like the Abuja-Kaduna Railway and the Zungeru Hydroelectric Power Project as evidence of the enduring collaboration between Nigeria and China.

Furthermore, the Deputy Speaker commended the increasing popularity of Chinese products in Nigerian households and noted the steady growth of Nigeria’s agricultural exports to China.

“The decades-long relationship between our two great nations, Nigeria and China, has been mutually beneficial, especially in recent times,” said Hon. Kalu.

“This partnership has resulted in cooperation across various sectors, including infrastructure development, trade, technology exchange, and cultural engagement. China’s significant investments in Nigeria have contributed tremendously to our nation’s growth and development, promoting economic prosperity and stability,” he added.

“China has been a steadfast partner in Nigeria’s infrastructure development, as demonstrated by projects like the Abuja-Kaduna Railway and the Zungeru Hydroelectric Power Project. These initiatives have not only improved connectivity within Nigeria but have also laid the foundation for sustainable economic growth,” Hon. Kalu continued.

“Our bilateral trade has flourished, creating new opportunities for both nations,” Hon. Kalu highlighted.

“I encourage both countries to prioritize people-to-people diplomacy to address issues that promote xenophobia,” he concluded.

Hon. Kalu also emphasized the positive impact of the symbiotic trade relationship between Nigeria and China. He pointed out that it has generated employment, boosted local industries, and improved the welfare of the people. Currently, Nigeria stands as China’s second-largest trading partner in Africa.
