The Bauchi State Chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has revealed its plans to join a nationwide strike organized by labour unions, beginning on Tuesday. Dauda Shu’aibu, the State NLC Chairman, made this announcement during a press conference held in Bauchi on Thursday, stating that this decision was in accordance with the directives issued by the NLC’s national headquarters.
Shu’aibu emphasized the chapter’s support for the resolutions made by the National Executive Council (NEC) of the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) during their respective meetings, where they critically analyzed the current state of affairs in the country.
He highlighted the unanimous condemnation of the government’s apparent lack of urgency and efficiency in addressing the adverse consequences of the recent fuel price hike. Shu’aibu stressed that the unions deliberated on the refusal of the Federal Government to engage in meaningful and constructive dialogue in good faith.
The NLC and TUC NEC sessions recognized that both Labour and the Government acknowledge the widespread suffering, impoverishment, and hunger facing Nigerians. These hardships have been aggravated by the increase in fuel prices, necessitating immediate remedial action.
Shu’aibu also voiced concerns over the threats faced by trade unions, as they continue to be subjected to brutality and suppression by the police and government. He stated that the strike action was not only in alignment with the upcoming Independence Day celebration, but also an opportunity to demonstrate the resolve for a truly independent Nigeria, where the citizens can take charge of their destiny and salvage the nation.
Effective from midnight on Tuesday, the NLC has instructed all workers across Nigeria to cease their services. The NLC Chairman urged all members and patriotic citizens to unite in support of the unions’ efforts in alleviating the country’s economic hardships.
