The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has called on the Supreme Court to put an end to executive rascality by unconditionally releasing its leader, Nnamdi Kanu.
IPOB emphasized that the unconditional release of Kanu would contribute to restoring peace in the Southeast, as kidnappers have taken advantage of his absence to operate freely in the region.
Emma Powerful, the spokesperson for IPOB, urged the justices of the apex court to make a lasting mark by ensuring the unconditional release of Kanu.
Part of a statement by Powerful reads, “We, the global movement and family of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), led by the Great Prophet and indefatigable liberator, Mazi Nnamdi Okwuchukwu Kanu, reiterate once again that the unconditional release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu from DSS solitary confinement will restore peace in the Southeast and, by extension, to the nation of Nigeria.”
“The absence of our supreme leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, due to his abduction in Kenya by the Nigerian government, has resulted in the insecurity and criminality in Biafra Land today because Biafrans hold him dear. Some sponsored criminals engage in kidnapping for ransom and car theft under the pretense of demanding Kanu’s release. His release will put an end to all that,” the statement continues.
“If the Supreme Court justices are genuinely interested in saving Nigeria and the people of the Eastern Region, they should uphold international and local laws and grant the freedom of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. Kidnapping and extraordinary rendition of an accused person are grave offenses according to international laws,” Powerful emphasized.
“We are eagerly waiting to see if the Supreme Court of Nigeria, as the Constitutional Court, will condone the international crime of extraordinary rendition or deliver justice. Furthermore, we want to see if the Justices of the Supreme Court of Nigeria will disregard the UN Charter on People’s Right to Self-Determination, which Mazi Nnamdi Kanu represents by advocating for Biafra’s freedom. World leaders must safeguard Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, as he holds the key to granting them a stake in the Biafran Nation should Biafra attain independence,” the statement adds.
“The justices of the Supreme Court have the opportunity to etch their names in history as men of honor by releasing Mazi Nnamdi Okwuchukwu Kanu, who has not committed any crime against local or international laws. They should put an end to the executive arm’s rascality that has characterized this case,” Powerful concludes.
“Instead, they should emulate the courage displayed by their colleagues on the panel of the Court of Appeal who ordered the unconditional discharge and acquittal of our leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, and barred any further trial in any court,” he further stated.
“The executive branch of Nigeria has undermined constitutional order, which has eroded the country’s integrity and influence both in Africa and internationally. The Supreme Court has a role to play in restoring the battered image of the Federal Republic of Nigeria by not succumbing to executive threats and intimidation in delivering justice. Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s case puts the Nigerian judiciary on trial and now places the Supreme Court in the spotlight,” Powerful concluded.
