Nigeria at 63: Ohanaeze Urges Tinubu to Pardon Kanu and Igboho in Honour of Azikiwe and Others

On the occasion of Nigeria’s 63rd anniversary, the Ohanaeze Ndigbo socio-cultural organization has appealed to President Bola Tinubu to grant an unconditional pardon to Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), and Sunday Igboho, the Yoruba Nation freedom fighter. The organization believes that this gesture would be a fitting tribute to the sacrifices made by late nationalists such as Nnamdi Azikiwe, Obafemi Awolowo, and Ahmadu Bello.

In a statement issued by the factional Secretary-General of Ohanaeze, Okechukwu Isiguzoro, it was emphasized that the unconditional release of Kanu and Igboho would go a long way in alleviating the disintegration threats currently facing Nigeria.

Furthermore, the Ohanaeze Ndigbo urged the Federal Government to utilize the 63rd Independence Day anniversary to demonstrate its unwavering commitment to unity and peace, in line with the spirit of the sacrifices made by the nation’s founding fathers.

Isiguzoro observed that both Kanu and Igboho have been outspoken about the urgent need for improved security and economic conditions in Southern Nigeria.

He noted that the prevailing political climate has brought about a resurgence in calls for secession, which raises concerns about the country’s unity.

Reflections on Nigeria’s Independence Day

“The 63rd Independence Day anniversary of Nigeria on the 1st of October 2023 will be observed with mixed feelings. While the nation celebrates its freedom from colonial rule, it also grapples with ongoing tensions and political unrest within its borders,” said Isiguzoro.

In particular, the apex Igbo organization reflected on the significant contributions of Nigerian nationalists in achieving independence in 1960.

“Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, a pan-Africanist and prominent Igbo leader, was one of the key figures who spearheaded the struggle for Nigeria’s independence. His efforts, along with those of other nationalists, were instrumental in securing sovereignty for Nigeria.”

However, Isiguzoro highlighted that the current political climate has given rise to renewed calls for secession, particularly from the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), led by Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

Concerns over Detention and Prosecution

The Ohanaeze Ndigbo expressed concerns over the continued detention of Kanu by the Federal Government, led by President Tinubu. This has become a source of tension and controversy, with many questioning the government’s actions, particularly in light of the lack of prosecution for Yoruba activist Sunday Igboho.

Isiguzoro pointed out that both Kanu and Igboho have been vocal advocates for the improvement of security and economic conditions in Southern Nigeria. This cause gained considerable momentum during the previous administration of President Buhari.

An Appeal for Unity

Against this backdrop, the Ohanaeze Ndigbo called upon President Tinubu to prioritize the unity of Nigeria above all other interests. They pleaded for a presidential pardon for both Kanu and Igboho, as a gesture that would honor the sacrifices made by Nigerian nationalists like Nnamdi Azikiwe, Obafemi Awolowo, and Ahmadu Bello.
