The National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS), under the leadership of Prof. Abubakar O. Sulaiman, extends warm felicitations to Nigeria on its 63rd Independence Anniversary. In a goodwill message addressed to Nigerians, Prof. Abubakar expressed the Institute’s unwavering determination to provide comprehensive technical support and the necessary legislative frameworks to bolster government efforts.

“As Nigeria celebrates its coming of age and its citizens assert their presence in various aspects of global life, there is much to take pride in as Nigerians,” affirms Prof. Abubakar.

The Director General emphasizes the significance for patriotic Nigerians to celebrate the unity of Nigeria despite the diverse languages, religions, and cultures that make up the nation. He acknowledges that more work needs to be done to fully realize the ambitious dreams that inspired the founding fathers in their struggle for independence over six decades ago.

“We must never lose sight of our God-given potential, and we must all play our part in realizing Nigeria’s greatness,” he adds.

Prof. Abubakar further announces NILDS’s recent relocation to its state-of-the-art permanent site, strategically situated at Plot 307, Cadastral Zone, Umaru Musa Yar’adua Expressway, Airport Road. This remarkable achievement signifies a major step towards the Institute’s vision of becoming the leading legislative support institution in the sub-region, the African continent, and beyond.

“Our priority is to ensure that the legislative frameworks are aligned with government actions, offer technical assistance to members and committees in crafting evidence-based laws, and are responsive to the needs of society,” states Prof. Abubakar.

Alignment with National Assembly Leadership Retreat

The conclusion of the National Assembly Leadership retreat in Ikot Ekpene, Akwa Ibom State, further solidified the alignment of the legislative agenda with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s 8-Point Agenda and “Renewed Hope” mantra. This harmonious relationship among the three arms of government serves as a testament to the nation’s commitment to improving the lives of Nigerians.

NILDS, established in 2011 as a capacity-building agency of the National Assembly of Nigeria, plays a crucial role in promoting and strengthening democracy in the country. Through research, training, and advocacy, the Institute ensures transparent and accountable lawmaking by providing capacity-building and support services to the legislature. Additionally, NILDS actively encourages civic engagement and heightens public awareness of the legislative process.
