In a remarkable gesture to mark Nigeria’s Independence Day celebration, Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State has granted freedom to three inmates of the Numan Correctional Centre.
The inmates, namely Zaro Boniface, Luka Grastone, and Jauro Banyi, who were serving prison terms, have been pardoned by the governor.
Additionally, in the spirit of mercy and justice, Governor Fintiri has commuted the death sentence of Jibrilla Usman from the Custodial Centre in Yola Town to life imprisonment.
Acting upon the recommendation of the Advisory Committee on Prerogative of Mercy and exercising the powers bestowed upon him by Section 212(i) (d) of the Constitution of Nigeria 1999, Governor Fintiri made these decisions.
A statement released by Mr Humwashi Wonosikou, the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, confirmed that the three prisoners have been granted their freedom as part of the 2023 Independence Day celebration.
In his Independence Day speech, Governor Fintiri emphasized that the greatness of Nigeria lies in the hands of its citizens.
“Statehood provided Nigeria with a significant opportunity to liberate itself from colonial oppression, make independent decisions regarding the nation’s future, and pave the way for a confident future,” Fintiri proclaimed.
