Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has urged Nigerians to embrace renewed hope for unity and prosperity, stating that it is not just a goal but a call to action.
In his address at the 63rd Independence Anniversary parade held in Ibadan, the state capital, Governor Makinde emphasized that unity is the key to overcoming obstacles and achieving greatness as a nation. Despite the challenges that have tested Nigeria’s resolve, he expressed unwavering belief in a brighter future.
“Today, as we celebrate our great nation’s 63rd anniversary, we find ourselves at a pivotal moment in our history. It is a moment that calls for renewed hope, unity, and a shared commitment to prosperity,” said Governor Makinde.
The governor acknowledged that Nigeria’s strength lies in its diversity of cultures, languages, and customs. He emphasized the importance of embracing this diversity and working towards a common goal of national advancement and prosperity.
“There have been times when our unity has been tested. Political differences, ethnic hostilities, and economic imbalances have posed challenges. However, these difficulties do not define us. They are merely stumbling stones on our path to greatness. It is time to rise beyond our differences and construct a stronger, more united Nigeria,” Governor Makinde stated.
Governor Makinde also highlighted the unattainable aspiration of prosperity for many Nigerians, stating that economic downturns, unemployment, and poverty have affected the lives of the people. However, he emphasized that Nigeria’s potential for wealth is limitless due to its abundant natural resources, entrepreneurial culture, and young population.
As Nigeria celebrates 63 years of independence, Governor Makinde called on Nigerians to honor the sacrifices made by the nation’s forefathers. He urged them to work tirelessly towards developing a country that the forefathers would be proud of, a Nigeria where every person has the opportunity to prosper.
“In conclusion, let me reaffirm my unwavering belief in the potential of Nigeria and its people. Happy 63rd Independence Day, Nigeria. May this day mark the beginning of a new chapter in our history, a chapter of unity, prosperity, and boundless hope,” Governor Makinde concluded.
The Independence Anniversary parade saw the participation of students from both public and private schools, as well as a few paramilitary organizations from across the state. However, members of the organized labor, including the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), were absent from the event. The venue and the surrounding environment lacked the usual pomp and ceremony associated with such occasions, despite the presence of top government functionaries.
The highlight of the event was the presentation of awards and gifts to deserving schools that participated in the march past.
