The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Ganduje, has emphasized the importance of good governance in reducing the occurrence of military coups in West Africa. During a meeting with a delegation from Ghana’s ruling party, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), led by its National Chairman, Stephen Ntim, Mr. Ganduje stressed the need for African leaders to prioritize good governance for the benefit of their citizens.

Recognizing the longstanding historical connection between Nigeria and Ghana, Mr. Ganduje emphasized the importance of exchanging ideas on good governance between the ruling parties of both countries. He firmly believes that with effective governance systems in place, the citizens themselves will resist any attempts at military intervention that could undermine democratic rule.
Mr. Ganduje stated, “This kind of visit is important and good to help us exchange ideas on how to deliver good governance to the people; and it can even reduce the tide of military incursions that we are witnessing recently. While we are discouraging military coups, we must improve our governance systems. When this is done, the masses will be the first to resist any such military interventions.”
Highlighting the shared values and political history between Ghana and Nigeria, the APC chairman described the visit of the NPP national chairman as a positive step in strengthening the relationship between the ruling political parties of both countries. Both countries have gone through independence struggles without bloodshed and share English as their official language, solidifying their bond.
Mr. Ntim, the NPP national chairman, congratulated Mr. Ganduje on his emergence as the APC national chairman and extended his greetings on Nigeria’s 63rd Independence Anniversary. He expressed his desire for the APC and NPP to collaborate on promoting good governance, ensuring that both parties remain in power for many more years.
During the meeting, Mr. Ntim emphasized that his party has a lot to learn from Mr. Ganduje and the APC as a whole. He described the visit as the beginning of a journey between the ruling parties of both countries towards enthroning good governance for the benefit of their citizens. He also highlighted the strong relationship between Nigeria and Ghana, with Ghanaian presidents having visited Nigeria 45 times since 2017.
The Ghanaian High Commissioner to Nigeria, Rashid Bawa, as well as several officials from the NPP, accompanied Mr. Ntim on the visit.
