Gombe State Government Approves N10,000 Transport Allowance for Workers

In a move aimed at alleviating the financial burden on workers, Gombe State Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya has given the green light to a N10,000 transport allowance for state employees. This measure will be in effect until a new minimum wage is determined.

The announcement was made by Governor Yahaya in his 63rd Independence Day message on Sunday. Notably, Governor Yahaya also serves as the Chairman of the Northern Governors’ Forum.

In addition to the transport allowance, the Gombe State government has implemented a food palliative program designed to support 400,000 beneficiaries.

Addressing the state’s workforce, Governor Yahaya stated, “Our administration has already approved a N10,000 transport allowance for all workers in the state while we await the determination of a new minimum wage. Furthermore, we have taken steps to provide palliative assistance through our food distribution program, which aims to reach 400,000 beneficiaries.”

It is important to note that the approved transport allowance in Gombe State is lower than the N35,000 approved for Federal Government workers under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.

Nigeria’s minimum monthly wage, which was approved in 2019, stands at N30,000. However, with headline inflation reaching 25.80% in August 2023 and exacerbated by the removal of fuel subsidies, there has been an increased demand for a new wage.
