A civil society organization, Women Professional Alliances (NWPA), has thrown its weight behind the reform agenda of the Accountant-General of the Federation (AGF), Oluwatoyin Madein.

The spokesperson for the group, Christine Ezekwe, conveyed this support during a news conference held on Sunday in Abuja.

Ezekwe advised the AGF to remain dedicated to her duties and continue her efforts in sanitizing the system.

She emphasized that any alleged malicious attacks against the AGF by certain individuals within the system will ultimately fail.

Ezekwe urged Madein not to be distracted but to stay resolute in the face of challenges.

The spokesperson stated that the group chose to speak out due to what they perceive as “unprovoked attacks against a woman who is simply carrying out her professional duties.”

The group expressed concern over the allegations made by some personnel in a petition against the Accountant-General, claiming that she is not qualified for the position.

Ezekwe questioned the motives behind these false accusations, as Madein’s appointment as AGF brought hope and high expectations across Nigeria, irrespective of gender, religion, or ethnicity.

The emergence of Madein inspired millions of young girls across the nation, in both the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Ezekwe alleged that a few men woke up one day and decided to tarnish Madein’s reputation for not conforming to their desires.

She urged the AGF to passionately carry out her duties, thereby fulfilling the aspirations of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, which promised to provide renewed hope for Nigerians.

Ezekwe highlighted the challenges women in positions of authority face, emphasizing that they often encounter prejudice and doubt regarding their ability to make tough decisions.

Dr. Osamudiamen Isokpehi, Coordinator of Pro-Impact Initiative, assured that no amount of opposition against the AGF would hinder routine personnel postings in the Treasury House.

Isokpehi cautioned against attempts to blackmail or derail Madein from implementing necessary reforms and cleansing the system.

He stressed that those behind the petition fail to comprehend the extent to which their self-centeredness and shallowness are exposed.

Isokpehi went on to describe the reforms that the AGF is currently pursuing, including a bottom-up cash plan to improve capital budget execution.

This reform ensures that agencies determine their own cash requirements on a monthly basis, rather than receiving funds based solely on allocations.

He mentioned another reform, which involves establishing a strategic revenue management team to curb revenue leakages and enhance internally generated revenues (IGR).

The team has set up a technical sub-committee that will undergo training in data analytics and will be responsible for managing data from agencies not currently linked to the AGF’s office via the Government Integrated Financial Management Information System (GIFMIS).

Isokpehi warned that a system in which the people, especially those in top positions, resist reforms or changes cannot succeed.

He called on the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister for the Economy, Wale Edun, to disregard the petition against the AGF and focus on realizing a vibrant economy under President Tinubu’s renewed hope agenda.

Isokpehi also appealed to the petitioners to immediately withdraw their petition and apologize to the AGF for the greater good of the country.
