Mauricio Pochettino Reveals Plan to Bring Chelsea Star Marc Cucurella Back to Squad

Chelsea manager, Mauricio Pochettino, has unveiled his strategy to reintegrate defender Marc Cucurella into the squad after his failed move to Manchester United over the summer.

With injuries sidelining Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia, Manchester United aimed to acquire Cucurella on loan during the final week of the summer transfer window. However, Chelsea’s decision to field the former Brighton star in a Carabao Cup match against AFC Wimbledon impeded the move. Consequently, Manchester United secured the signing of Sergio Reguilon from Tottenham Hotspur instead.

Since his £65 million transfer to Chelsea from Brighton last year, Cucurella has endured a challenging first season. Recent reports have indicated that Pochettino’s side is open to allowing him to leave in January.

Speaking ahead of Chelsea’s Premier League fixture against Fulham on Monday night, Pochettino expressed his satisfaction with Cucurella’s commitment and stated that the Spaniard deserves a chance to play for the Blues.

The Argentine manager also clarified that he had no involvement in Cucurella’s failed move to Manchester United. Nevertheless, Pochettino disclosed that he has reached out to the left-back to offer him a path back into the team since then.

“I don’t know because I wasn’t involved in this situation. That was more the responsibility of the sporting director, the [player’s] agent, and the club,” Pochettino remarked regarding Cucurella’s near-departure from Chelsea.

He further added, “After the transfer window closed, we had a discussion in my office. We were very clear about how I perceive and evaluate him, and I listened to his sentiments. Undoubtedly, he faced difficulties after arriving from Brighton.

“It was a tough period, not only for him but for many players as well. That’s why we need to instill confidence and trust in him. He is our player, and I believe he put in a solid performance against Brighton on Wednesday while playing on the right-hand side.

“I think he did well, and I’m delighted with his performance and dedication. That’s what we expect from our players. It’s now about working hard, being patient, and seizing the opportunity. The situation is crystal clear – he is part of our plan. If he proves himself deserving, he will be on the pitch.”
