In a compelling message, Hajia Hadiza Umar Namadi, the wife of Jigawa State Governor, has emphasized the importance of genotype testing for couples before entering into marriage. Her advice comes as part of her ongoing efforts to spread awareness about sickle cell disease and Vesicovaginal Fistula (VVF) infection in the state.

Creating Awareness and Preventing Deadly Diseases

Hajia Hadiza embarked on a visit to sickle cell and VVF patients at Rasheed Shekoni Teaching Hospital and Jahun General Hospital in Dutse and Jahun LGAs of Jigawa State. The purpose of her visit was to raise awareness of preventive measures against these debilitating conditions, both of which contribute to a high maternal and child mortality rate in the state.

The Importance of Genotype Screening

The Jigawa First Lady strongly advised young people to prioritize genotype screening before making any marital arrangements. By doing so, she believes that couples can avoid the risks associated with inheriting sickle cell disease, which can be life-threatening. Additionally, she urged parents to avoid marrying off their daughters at early ages, stressing the importance of informed and responsible decision-making.

The Government’s Commitment to Tackling the Issue

Mrs. Namadi highlighted the measures taken by the Jigawa State government, led by Governor Mallam Umar Namadi, to address these challenges. The introduction of free girl-child education and free VVF surgery are among the initiatives aimed at reducing the prevalence of these diseases and improving overall healthcare in the state.

Supporting Those in Need

As part of her visit, the governor’s wife generously donated food items and essential materials to the sickle cell and VVF patients, recognizing the importance of providing support and care to those affected by these conditions.
