Algeria has offered to mediate in Niger’s political crisis, which has been engulfing the nation since a military coup d’etat in July. The government of Niger has accepted this offer, with mediation efforts to be led by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.
Unlike other neighboring countries, Algeria has consistently opposed a military response to the crisis. This stance has been reiterated by the Algerian foreign ministry as they advocate for a diplomatic solution to the ongoing turmoil.
Initially, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) threatened military intervention but has since shifted its focus towards diplomatic negotiations. In August, the military junta in Niger proposed a six-month transition plan to restore civilian rule.
The involvement of Algeria as a mediator brings hope for a peaceful resolution to the crisis in Niger. This move indicates a diplomatic approach aimed at stability and unity within the region.
