Yoruba Nation activist, Chief Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, has expressed his heartfelt gratitude to former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka, Professor Banji Akintoye, Ayo Adebanjo, and several traditional rulers for their pivotal roles in securing his release from Beninese custody.
Igboho conveyed his appreciation in a statement shared on his Instagram handle titled, “My Release in Benin Republic.”
Addressing the public, Igboho’s statement read, “First and foremost, I extend my sincere appreciation to the Almighty God, the master of the universe, for making this day possible.”
“I offer special thanks to President Talon of Benin Republic and all members of his cabinet. My gratitude also goes to my heroic father, Professor Banji Akintoye, and Professor Wole Soyinka for their unwavering support throughout the course of our struggle. Baba, may God reward you abundantly for standing courageously for our Yoruba nation and for me. You vowed to stand by me during my ordeal in Benin Republic, and you have fulfilled your promise.”
“I would also like to express my gratitude to former President Olusegun Obasanjo and Baba Ayo Adebanjo for their valuable contributions, recognizing that freedom ultimately comes from God alone. Moreover, I seize this opportunity to extend my heartfelt thanks to all religious leaders, pastors, Muslim clerics, and traditional worshippers who diligently prayed for me day and night.”
In July 2021, Igboho was apprehended by the International Criminal Police Organisation at Cadjèhoun Airport in Cotonou, Republic of Benin, while en route to Germany.
The activist had fled Nigeria following a violent raid on his residence in Soka, Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, by the Department of State Services (DSS), accusing him of stockpiling arms.
