The management of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY) in Abeokuta, Ogun State, has made the decision to temporarily suspend academic activities due to an ongoing strike by the institution’s workers.
About both academic and non-academic staff at MAPOLY recently embarked on an indefinite strike, citing nonpayment of salaries for the months of July, August, and September. As a result, academic operations have come to a halt.
In an internal memorandum sent to all students, the Registrar, Olubunmi Elewodalu, notified the student body that academic activities would be suspended for a duration of one week, beginning from Monday, October 9th.
The memorandum, labeled MAP/REG. 486/VOL I/188 and dated 8th October 2023, urged students to refrain from visiting the campus until further notice.
“The management of the Polytechnic, on behalf of the Academic Board, hereby announces the suspension of all academic activities for a period of one week,” the memorandum stated.
“The temporary suspension is a response to the prevailing circumstances within the Polytechnic. Academic activities will be postponed from Monday, 9th October to Friday, 13th October 2023. During this period, all students are requested to stay off campus until further notice,” the memorandum further explained.
The Public Relations Officer of MAPOLY, Yemi Ajibola, confirmed the suspension of academic activities when contacted.
“Yes. Management issued that memo. It is important for students to return home as their lecturers will not be available to hold classes,” Ajibola affirmed.
Meanwhile, students of the polytechnic have expressed their intent to stage a peaceful protest on Monday to highlight the prevailing situation at MAPOLY.
