Katsina Retirees Plead with Governor Radda for Pension Increment

Retirees in Katsina State are appealing to the State Government to increase their monthly pension just like in other states.

Abdulrahman Ashura, the State Secretary of the National Union of Pensioners, made this plea when speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria in Daura on Monday.

He highlighted that this appeal is in accordance with section 173(3) and 210(3) of the 1999 constitution, which states that the pension of retired officers should be reviewed every five years or when workers’ wages are reviewed.

“There was distribution of palliatives to workers’ unions across the 34 Local Government Areas of the state, but the pensioners were not included,” he said.

“Another major concern is the outstanding pension arrears for local government staff from the period of May 2012 to April 2014,” he added.

Although the gratuity arrears were settled in 2016, the pension arrears are yet to be paid.

Ashura expressed his appreciation to Governor Dikko Radda for establishing a committee to reform the state and local government pension system.

He also commended the governor for his plans to create a pension affairs commission in the state to address pension-related issues.
